Lay Retreat 2009
Best Western Lakefront Hotel
Manitowoc, WI
Friday evening October 2 thru Sunday morning October 4
Again Jesus began to teach by the lake.
The crowd that gathered around Him was so large that He got into a boat and sat in it out on the
lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water's edge.
Mark 4:1
Once again, Jesus will teach as His people gather along the shore. This time He will teach through His servant
Rev. Kerry Willis who has many times stood on the shores where Jesus taught. The setting will be at Wisconsin District's Lay Retreat
and this time the shoreline will be that of beautiful Lake Michigan!
Don't miss out! There are only 40 rooms available on a first come - first served basis.
The Wisconsin District welcomes Rev. Kerry Willis, Senior Pastor of Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene of Harrisonburg, Virginia
as our guest speaker this year. Kerry is a very sought after speaker worldwide across the Church of the Nazarene, often referred to as
The Vision Pastor because he seeks to, "help others minimize future regrets."
In addition to pastoring a vibrant, growing church of 1,500, Kerry travels often to The Holy Land and to Europe to encourage the Nazarene pastors and churches there.
As a keynote speaker at the 2008 U.S. Nazarene Pastor's Conference in San Diego, California he challenged pastors to seek a deeper walk with God, cautioning, "We are tempted to forfeit His Holy presence for our human performance."
General Superintendent Dr. Stan Toler featured model sermons by Kerry in the Church of the Nazarene Stewardship Resource Kit entitled, "Lordship Living - God Provides."
The son of a fisherman and a former professional photographer, Kerry appreciates God's creation, capturing beautiful scenic and landscape photos wherever he travels.
These are all significant accomplishments, but what drew us to Kerry was being with him in Israel and Jordan for 10 days last year and seeing how he ministered to our missionaries, pastors and lay people from church to church. He impacted us with touching devotions as we walked where Jesus walked and he preached dynamic messages in the churches.
Rev. Kerry Willis and his wife Kim will join us and become your newest friends. You'll love Kerry's down to earth style, his deep walk with the Lord, and how he will draw on his rich ties to Israel and the Holy Land as he shares.

Lay Retreat 101
Q: What is Lay Retreat anyway?
A: Lay Retreat is a gathering of lay people from across Wisconsin.
Q: Wait a minute - what is a "lay"?
A: A layperson or the laity as some churches describe them are adults in the church who are not clergy, that is they are not pastors or their mates.
Q: Why should lay people meet together?
A: Lay people share a common path - serving and seeking God actively, but not professionally as our pastors do. Additionally, lay people can gain valuable insight about how to effectively and appropriately support their pastors and church leadership when they gather together.
Q: What about my pastor?
A: The district also provides a retreat specifically for pastors (Ministers and Mates Retreat) and retreats where pastors, their mates and lay people gather together (Assemblies, Women's Retreat and Men's Retreat).
Q: So what will I do at Lay Retreat?
A: At this year's retreat, lay people will gather Friday evening for an evening of music, worship, a message from the retreat speaker and some casual fellowship. On Saturday, a breakfast buffet is provided then a morning time of worship and a message from the speaker. After a provided luncheon, Saturday afternoon is free time for you to spend as you wish. Retreaters will gather Saturday evening for a banquet, a time of worship and an evening message, then a hard to describe time of fun with an auction and more fellowship. On Sunday morning, retreaters dig into the Word in an adult Sunday School session, then worship and hear a concluding message from the special speaker. Holy Communion is usually shared on Sunday AM.
Q: What can people do during their Saturday free time?
A: The Manitowoc area offers many options - tour one of the Great Lakes region's best maritime museums and a WWII submarine; play golf (conventional or disk); walk, rollerblade or ride a bike along the beautiful lakeshore on the over 10 miles of trails; go fishing in Lake Michigan or the many local rivers; visit any of the other six museums; visit a 77 year old candy and ice cream shop; tour a nuclear power plant; spend some time with friends; go shopping; go antiquing; visit some lighthouses, take a nap; visit a beautiful public gardens on Lake Michigan, take a drive on a WI Rustic Road. That ought to be enough options to start with.
Q: Why should I come?
A: If you are married with children - let's see; this is a chance for you to let the kids spend the weekend with family or friends while the two of you can get away for some together time, some great food, a very nice hotel room on Lake Michigan, spend some of the time with good friends and experience very special worship - all for $200. This hotel alone, would typically cost that. Sounds good to me! Men, shock your wife and suggest you want to get away with her to the lakeshore. She will never forget you suggested it. Women, if your husband doesn't suggest it, you make plans. Some guys are shy, but he'll have a great time.
If you are single, you likely enjoy finding opportunities to be with friends. At retreat you will be with old friends and will meet new ones. There are other single adults across the district just like you. We have singles and married couples at Lay Retreat.
If you are an empty-nester couple, this is one of those special opportunities to get away, enjoy some time with each other and with friends. We've had retreaters from age 19 to their early 90's. They all have enjoyed themselves. Retreat is for adults with the exception of a newborn child who is too young to leave.
